Bolton boss Owen Coyle insists Kevin Davies's future at the club is in the striker's hands.

Bolton Wanderers manager Owen Coyle has challenged Kevin Davies to earn a new contract by playing at his best from now until the end of the season.

Davies, 34, is the Bolton club captain but has not started a match for them since December 17, prompting speculation over whether he will be offered a new contract when his current one expires this summer.

However, Coyle insists that no decision has been made either way, and has claimed that Davies's future is in his own hands.

"Kevin will be the first to tell you that he's desperate to play at the level he is capable of - the level that got him into the England team," Coyle told The Daily Express.

"Every player, no matter what their age or situation, it's up to them if they want to be at Bolton to go and earn that contract.

"The players will know it's up to them to go and show what they can do."

Davies has scored just two goals in 16 appearances for Bolton this season.
