Preview: Barnsley vs. Ipswich Town

Sports Mole previews Saturday's Championship encounter between struggling Barnsley and playoff-chasing Ipswich.

Both Barnsley and Ipswich Town will be searching for three points for very different reasons when they face each other at Oakwell on Saturday.

The hosts moved off the bottom of the Championship table last Tuesday but were unable to follow that up with a positive result as Sheffield Wednesday edged a Yorkshire derby 1-0 in the 97th minute on Saturday.

That result leaves the Tykes five points adrift of safety, although they do have a game in hand over 21st-placed Millwall which could close that gap to just a single point.

Incidentally, Millwall are one of only two teams to have conceded more goals than Barnsley this season, although Danny Wilson has stemmed the tide a little, seeing his side concede just 10 in their last 10 league matches.

The hosts have struggled in front of their own fans this season, but it is their home form that will be the key to them staying up, so all of the matches at Oakwell will take on greater importance as the season progresses.

Wilson will be without Emmanuel Frimpong after he was sent off after just half-an-hour of his debut on Saturday, while Jacob Mellis also saw red in the closing stages so will join his new teammate in the stands.

Ipswich, meanwhile, are chasing the playoffs and could move to within one point of the top six with a victory this weekend.

Mick McCarthy's side have overcome a poor run of form that saw them go six games without a win in all competitions and have now picked up seven points from the last nine available.

Sitting in seventh place in the Championship table, they are leading the chasing pack for a playoff spot as things stand, but they will not need telling that they can't afford many more slip-ups.

The Tractor Boys have a decent away record to fall back on with just one defeat in their last 10 Championship matches on the road, although six of those games have ended in draws.

Luke Hyam and Anthony Wordsworth face late fitness tests to determine whether they will be ready in time for the match or not, while Cole Skuse is expected to be available for selection.
