Andrew Halliday admits that he could have left Championship side Middlesbrough for Rangers this summer.

Middlesbrough winger Andrew Halliday has revealed that he turned down the chance to join Scottish side Rangers when he agreed to a new contract at the Riverside Stadium.

With his previous deal due to expire, the 21-year-old signed an extension last week to keep him with the Championship club until the summer of 2015.

However, Halliday has admitted that he could have joined his boyhood club, who are currently leading the Scottish Third Division by 20 points from their nearest challengers.

"I don't hide the fact that I am a massive Rangers fan. My family are all Rangers fans and my first flat was right next to Ibrox," he told the Northern Echo. "There was a bit of interest from Rangers I think, but I am really enjoying myself at Middlesbrough and, what can I say, it's an excellent place to play my football.

"It's a big chance to get to where everyone wants to go in their careers - the Premier League."

Halliday joined Boro from Livingston back in 2010.
