Virgil van Dijk says that recent comments that he made about his Liverpool future were 'taken out of context', adding that he remains committed to the club.

Virgil van Dijk has reiterated that he remains committed to Liverpool, saying that recent comments had been 'taken out of context'.

In just over six years at Anfield, Van Dijk has already established himself as one of the club's greatest-ever defenders.

As well as 246 appearances being made in all competitions, the Netherlands international has lifted seven pieces of silverware, including the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup and EFL Cup.

However, his long-term future on Merseyside has been put into some doubt on the back of Jurgen Klopp announcing his decision to depart Liverpool at the end of the season.

While Van Dijk - the Liverpool captain - will likely command a place in the team of whoever replaces the German, the 32-year-old's contract is due to expire in 2025.

When quizzed on Klopp's revelation and his future last week, Van Dijk indicated that he was unsure where he would spend the next phase of his career.

That led to speculation that Van Dijk may also make the decision to take on a new challenge elsewhere, but the long-serving centre-back has taken the chance to clarify his stance.

Speaking on the Men in Blazers podcast, Van Dijk says that he was misunderstood, reiterating that he is not seeking a move away from Anfield.

He said: "It's much taken out of context. To be 100% clear, I'm fully committed to the club. I love the club, I love the fans. It is fully taken out of context.

"It's not about me, it's not about I, It's about us and nothing has changed. Five days ago we weren't even speaking about my contract, so it's silly.

"My full focus is on making sure this year can be a very special year and obviously a big announcement in the last couple of days, it's been a shock to each one of us connected to the club. I feel exactly what the fans have been feeling."

Van Dijk has played a starring role in a squad that is attempting to win four trophies this season, making 24 appearances in all competitions.

The Dutchman will skipper the side on Wednesday evening when Liverpool play host to Chelsea in the Premier League, looking to strengthen their position at the top of the standings.
