Gus Poyet praises veteran defenders

Brighton manager Gus Poyet praises Mauricio Tarrico and Steve Harper after the Seagulls' 2-0 victory over Barnsley.

Brighton manager Gus Poyet applauded Mauricio Tarrico and goalkeeper Steve Harper after the veteran pair guided the Seagulls to a 2-0 victory over Barnsley this afternoon.

The 36-year-old stopper arrived on loan from Newcastle United last month and made a string of fine saves as the home side recorded their first win in 10 league games.

"You need your key players," said Poyet. "Steve Harper made two or three great saves."

Tarrico, assistant manager to the Uruguayan at the Amex Stadium, announced that his playing days were over a month ago, but he was persuaded by Poyet to come out of retirement after an injury crisis at the club.

The 38-year-old, a teammate of Poyet at Tottenham, received special praise from his boss.

"I was as hard as I can be with someone who you know (Taricco), in terms of quality and understanding, is better than the rest of the players," he added.

Brighton next travel to table-toppers Southampton after the international break.
