Arsene Wenger: 'Arsenal need another defender'

Arsene Wenger acknowledges that Arsenal need another defensive player when the transfer window reopens in the New Year.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has revealed that he will look to sign at least one new defender when the transfer window reopens in January.

The Gunners brought in Mathieu Debuchy and Calum Chambers in the summer to ease defensive concerns ahead of the new season, although injury problems have left the North London outfit short at the back once more.

Despite being happy with his previous captures, Wenger acknowledges that he will need to delve into the market again in the New Year in order to strengthen his side.

"We bought good players, I believe we've done remarkably well in the transfer market," the Frenchman is quoted as saying by The Independent when asked about recent injury issues in defence. "We wanted one more player, but couldn't. We will try to rectify that in January.

"We have a good core of young British players, who feel the value of our club. Slowly the modern game has lost that. So we need [the fans'] support again. I encourage you to be behind us. You are magnificent. And I'm sure we will come out this season more united and stronger."

Arsenal take on Hull City this weekend looking to improve on their current position of eighth place in the Premier League table.
