Preview: Gillingham vs. Stevenage - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Saturday's League Two clash between Gillingham and Stevenage, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

This Saturday will see two teams at opposite ends of the League Two table compete as table toppers Stevenage will be making the trip to Priestfield to play Gillingham.

While the hosts are 19th right now, they have put together an undefeated run of five games in all competitions heading into this difficult test.

Match preview

Gillingham's league position might not be what they are looking for right now, but their recent performances have showcased strong improvements.

Neil Harris will be pleased with the efforts of his men across the league and the EFL Trophy, and they have been rewarded with their first victories of the season.

The Gills have won just twice to this point in League Two, but they have both taken place recently, filling the team with confidence.

That is something that they will need to take into Saturday's fixture considering who their opponents are, and how well they are playing at the moment.

Defensively Gillingham have also shown improvements throughout the recent period, keeping a couple of clean sheets, which they will want to continue against a strong offensive unit.

The hosts are not the only team enjoying a solid run of form though, as Stevenage have won five games in a row since their 3-0 loss to fellow promotion hopefuls Bradford City.

Steve Evans has crafted a team that is very confident in the attack, which has been highlighted by the fact they have scored 19 goals already this season in League Two.

The attacking displays have been rewarded with their position in the table, as Stevenage head into this match as the league leaders right now.

The Boro may have scored 11 goals in their previous five matches, but they have been just as strong defensively as the team have conceded just once in that run.

It is something that Evans will expect his team to continue this weekend, with Stevenage looking to maintain, or extend the two-point gap they have on their closest challengers.

Team News

Lewis Walker will be hoping to retain his place in the starting lineup for Gillingham this Saturday after he found the back of the net in their midweek EFL Trophy fixture.

The Gills have another strong attacking option in Mikael Mandron as well, who has been putting together strong performances as of late and will likely feature again.

Jordan Roberts bagged a brace at the weekend for Stevenage, and that attacking quality from the midfield could prove to be vital here.

He will likely be part of a three in the middle of the park with Jake Reeves in the center and Alex Gilbey making up the final slot, with Boro applying a 5-3-2 formation.

Gillingham possible starting lineup:
Morris; Alexander, Ehmer, Wright, Law; Williams, McKenzie; Walker, Kashket, Adelakun; Mandron

Stevenage possible starting lineup:
Ashby-Hammond; Wildin, Sweeney, Vancooten, Piergianni, Early; Roberts, Gilbey, Reeves; Rose, Reid

We say: Gillingham 0-2 Stevenage

Gillingham have been playing well as of late, despite their league positioning, and that is something that could lead to them causing problems on Sunday.

However, even with the confidence that the hosts have, Saturday will likely prove to be a difficult test for them against a team proving to be dominant right now.
