Gary Cahill honoured to become England vice captain

Gary Cahill reveals his delight after being named vice captain by England manager Roy Hodgson.

Gary Cahill has revealed his pride after being named England vice captain by Roy Hodgson last week.

The Chelsea defender, who wore the armband twice in the latter stages of the past two matches, admits that being given the opportunity to be Wayne Rooney's deputy is a big honour.

"The manager pulled me the other day after training and told me," Cahill told reporters. "It was a proud moment. Last week against Norway was the first time I'd worn the armband. I know it was the last few minutes of a friendly but it still meant a hell of a lot to me.

"I've seen it happen in the past that through injuries, suspensions or whatever that you do get the chance to lead them out would be a dream come true.

"In terms of experience, I'm probably up there with a few of the others and everyone else is young and just starting out on their careers for England and in the Premier League."

Cahill has won 29 caps since making his England debut in 2010.
