Chelsea midfielder Romeo Lavia provides an update on his fitness ahead of potentially representing Belgium in their upcoming UEFA Nations League fixtures.

Chelsea midfielder Romeo Lavia has provided a positive injury update ahead of potentially representing Belgium.

Lavia endured a first season to forget at Stamford Bridge, making just one substitute appearance at the midway point of the campaign due to ankle and thigh injuries.

That led to caution over how the former Manchester City youngster may adapt to life under Enzo Maresca, yet he has become a regular in the side when fit.

Despite further time on the sidelines, the 25-year-old was able to make four Premier League starts in succession ahead of the November international break.

Maresca and the club's hierarchy will be delighted with how he has fared against the likes of Liverpool, Newcastle United, Manchester United and Arsenal.

However, Lavia was forced off at the 68-minute mark versus the Gunners on Sunday after suffering a knock, putting his game time with Belgium at risk.

What has Lavia had to say?

Being selected by the Red Devils is a major step forward for Lavia, who remains with the one international cap that he earned in March 2023.

Domenico Tedesco now hopes to have Lavia available for the upcoming UEFA Nations League fixtures against Italy and Israel respectively.

Speaking to RTL, Lavia has indicated that he expects to be in a position to feature in at least one of those matches.

He said: "I received a little blow. At the moment, we are testing to see if it is okay, but it should be fine, I think."

Will Chelsea prefer withdrawal?

Chelsea have been taking a cautious approach with regards to Lavia's fitness, restricting him to no more than one game per week.

That plan will continue up until the New Year at the earliest, and it is something that Tedesco will have to take into consideration when deciding how to use the £53m man.

Although Chelsea may prefer for Lavia to enjoy a complete rest, there is less risk of further damage if his injury is not muscle-related.

Wesley Fofana, another player who has suffered long-term injury issues, has already withdrawn from the France squad due to inflammation of his knee.
