Arsenal are expected to give Robin van Persie's captain's armband to defender Thomas Vermaelen due to the striker's impending departure.

Arsenal defender Thomas Vermaelen will reportedly be announced as the club's new captain following striker Robin van Persie's decision to leave the club.

The current skipper, who announced that he would not sign a new deal with the Gunners earlier in the summer, is due to finalise a switch to Manchester United after the former Premier League champions confirmed that a deal had been agreed between the two parties.

It is understood that the 26-year-old, who experienced an inconsistent campaign at the Emirates last season due to injury, has been chosen to take the captain's armband, according to BBC Sport.

Vermaelen has been with the North London outfit since 2009.
