Tottenham Hotspur's Mauricio Pochettino: 'Europa League qualification important'

Tottenham Hotspur boss Mauricio Pochettino insists that the team regard the Europa League as "important" as they prepare to qualify for the tournament on Wednesday.

Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino has insisted that the team are determined to qualify for the Europa League after their Champions League dream came crashing down.

The North London outfit were knocked out of the elite tournament after losing 2-1 to Monaco last month.

If they secure victory over CSKA Moscow on Wednesday evening at Wembley, then Pochettino and his men will go into the Europa League.

The second-tier UEFA competition has been regarded at times as a disruptive tournament to those vying for titles in domestic leagues.

Spurs are trying to keep themselves in the hunt for the Premier League title as they currently sit seven points off the pace, but Pochettino has insisted that his team will not throw away an opportunity to compete in Europe, no matter what the tournament.

"Our supporters never want us to lose a game," the Argentine told reporters. "It's important to be involved in the Europa League. It's important for the club.

"Why not to think maybe it's a good opportunity to win a trophy? I don't know why anyone would think in a different way. We need to be positive. We're disappointed. But we need to be alive and try to win that trophy. Why not? I believe it is important. We didn't play well in the Champions League at Wembley.

"Last season we lost against Borussia Dortmund in the Europa League and tried to go farther. Now is not the moment to say only Premier League or FA Cup. We need to believe. In every competition we play we can win."

Spurs are yet to win a European game at Wembley having lost two so far.
