Newcastle United secure an extra-time victory against Nottingham Forest.

Newcastle United have snatched an extra-time victory against Nottingham Forest to earn a place in the fourth round of the Carling Cup.

Peter Lovenkrands opened the scoresheet for Newcastle with a close-range header after 38 minutes, leaving the Magpies 1-0 up at the break.

The score was soon levelled as Robbie Findley squared up for the home side within the first 40 seconds of the second half, scoring with a long-range shot.

Lovenkrands responded by attaining a brace with an assist from Sylvain Marveaux just before the hour mark, before Matt Derbyshire equalised a few minutes later.

After missed last-minute opportunities from both sides the match went to extra time, which fell to the Magpies' advantage through a long-range effort from Danny Simpson before the score was again evened out by Marcus Tudgay.

A close-range header from Fabricio Coloccini in stoppage time of the second half of extra time prevented the need for penalties and allowed Newcastle through to the next round.
