Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley is prepared to pay big to extend Rafael Benitez's contract by a further 12 months, according to a report.

Rafael Benitez will reportedly be offered a lucrative £15m contract to stay on at Newcastle United for another year.

The Spaniard confirmed again after his side's 4-0 victory over Fulham on the final day of the Premier League season that he is still unsure about his future.

Benitez will officially be out of contract at St James' Park next month, but talks between the 59-year-old and owner Mike Ashley are ongoing.

According to The Sun, there is hope than an agreement can be struck as United are prepared to hand Benitez a bumper deal that will be worth around £240,000 a week, on top of bonuses if he hits various targets.

The report suggests that Ashley does not want to hand the ex-Liverpool boss a longer deal as it would add to the cost of anyone looking to buy the club.

Newcastle finished the 2018-19 season 13th in the Premier League.
