Steve McClaren: 'Jack Butland was the difference'

Newcastle United manager Steve McClaren says that Stoke City goalkeeper Jack Butland was the difference between the two sides in their 0-0 draw at St James' Park.

Newcastle United manager Steve McClaren heralded Stoke City goalkeeper Jack Butland's performance that helped earn the Potters a 0-0 draw at St James' Park.

The former England manager felt that his team put in another good performance, but the 22-year-old was the main reason why his team failed to convert their chances in the game.

The 54-year-old told the BBC: "The English goalkeeping situation looks very healthy because that was a magnificent performance from Jack Butland.

"We had him at Derby for a couple of months and I think today, four great saves that have ultimately deprived us of three points which I thought we deserved and got Stoke a point. It was unbelievable and that was the difference between us and three points.

"I thought our performance, considering last week and the disappointment, we carried it on. We dominated the game, created chances and did not tuck one away.

"We are frustrated but I think that if we keep going this way, we will create chances and we looked a good team today."

The point lifts Newcastle into 18th in the Premier League table, one point away from safety.
