Dermot Gallagher: 'Sir Alex Ferguson once tried to get match postponed'

Former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher reveals that Sir Alex Ferguson once tried to get a match postponed in order to boost his club's chances of winning the league.

Ex-Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher has reportedly revealed that former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson once tried to have one of his matches postponed in a bid to boost the club's title chances.

The 56-year-old has recalled how the Scotsman approached him during a clash while it was pouring down with rain, claiming that the North-West outfit would have a better chance of winning the league if the game was called off.

"It was chucking it down with rain and Fergie pulled me aside and said 'do me a favour, call the game off'," Gallagher told Sportlobster.

"I asked why and he said there's nowhere else to fit this game in and the Premier League will have to extend the season. 'We'll have a better chance of winning the match and we'll win the league at Old Trafford.'"

Gallagher has claimed that the Old Trafford clash left United 3-1 down at half-time, but the Red Devils managed to recover to draw 3-3.
