The Blues had the better of the opening exchanges at Elland Road, with Ravel Morrison and Nathan Redmond forcing Jamie Ashdown into making important saves in the first 15 minutes.
However, it was Leeds who came closest to taking the lead, as Jason Pearce was unlucky to see his header from close range come off the post.
That did not rattle Birmingham, though, who went ahead in the 32nd minute, Wade Elliott firing in from outside the box.
The visitors came close to doubling their advantage before the break, but Ashdown once again saved Leeds, keeping out Elliott's free kick.
The start of the second half saw Leeds show more determination, with Luciano Becchio and El-Hadji Diouf forcing Colin Doyle into making two quick saves.
Doyle was unable to do much on the hour-mark when Becchio latched onto David Norris's pass and shot home from inside the penalty area.
Redmond tried to secure the win for Birmingham in the 70th minute when he shot from the edge of the area, but his effort went wide.
