Eric Abidal: 'Second still the aim for France'

Eric Abidal admits that France's aim for World Cup qualifying Group I was always the playoffs.

France and Monaco left-back Eric Abidal has insisted that the national side's aim remains qualification for the World Cup through the playoffs.

Les Bleus are currently second in Group I and level on points with Spain but have played one more game.

"What's the objective when you're in a group with Spain? To finish second and go through the playoffs," Ligue1.com quotes Abidal as saying.

"What position are we in? We're second. You have to be realistic and say you've got the reigning world champions and double European champions in your group with you.

"You need to be lucid. We played in order to try to finish first but logic dictated that we should finish second and that's what we're going to do."

France's final game is at home to Finland on Tuesday.
