Chelsea interim boss Roberto Di Matteo praises his side's "immense effort" as they beat Bayern Munich to win the Champions League for the first time in their history.

Chelsea interim manager Roberto Di Matteo has hailed his side's "immense effort" after they beat Bayern Munich on penalties to win the Champions League.

Thomas Muller's late goal in normal time looked to have sealed the win for the Germans, but Didier Drogba found the net in the final stages to take the game to extra time.

After neither team could find a winner in the additional 30 minutes, Drogba scored the decisive kick from the spot to give the Blues their first ever triumph in the competition.

"We have a group of players that have a big heart, passion and desire and that was the only way to achieve this trophy," Di Matteo told Sky Sports News.

"It was an immense effort from everyone and we are very happy. Bayern is a good team and when they scored there wasn't much time left and in a game like this you need players to rise to the occasion.

"He's (Drogba) been incredible for this club. He scored a fantastic goal to keep us in the game and then the penalty to win it."

It remains unclear whether Di Matteo will be given the job at the club on a full-time basis.
