Arsene Wenger: 'Petr Cech can be like Edwin van der Sar'

Arsene Wenger says that Arsenal goalkeeper Petr Cech can emulate the legendary Edwin van der Sar as far as longevity goes.

Arsene Wenger has likened Petr Cech to Edwin van der Sar by claiming that the veteran goalkeeper still has plenty to offer Arsenal.

The 33-year-old swapped Chelsea for the Gunners this summer for a reported £10m, but it has been suggested that the Czech's best years are behind him.

Van der Sar joined Manchester United at the age of 34 in 2005, before helping the Red Devils to four Premier League titles and one Champions League triumph.

During the 2008-09 campaign, the Dutchman went a world-record 1,311 minutes without conceding a goal, and Wenger says that there is no reason why Cech cannot defy his age with similar heroics.

"His move is a bit like Van der Sar," the Frenchman is quoted as saying by The Mirror.

"He went from Fulham to Man United but still had five or six years at Manchester United so I don't see why he shouldn't have a few more years.

"He's very serious, he trains well, has no big problems. He has an intimidating presence, that is for sure. He makes the goals look small. That's the kind of charisma he has. He is a big size."

Cech is expected to start at Wembley on Sunday when the North Londoners take on his former club Chelsea in the Community Shield.
