England Women's Laura Bassett: 'I was overwhelmed with emotion'

England Women defender Laura Bassett admits that she was overwhelmed with despair following her stoppage-time own goal in her side's defeat to Japan at the World Cup.

England Women defender Laura Bassett has conceded that she was overwhelmed with emotion following her heartbreaking own goal in her side's World Cup semi-final defeat to Japan.

The 31-year-old sliced the ball into the back of her own net in stoppage time in Edmonton to hand Norio Sasaki's team a place in the final.

Bassett was inconsolable at the final whistle, but has thanked her teammates for their support in helping her get over the incident.

She told BBC Sport: "I have to say a big, big thank you to my teammates. We've come on a long journey. The togetherness we've created and team spirit hasn't just happened overnight.

"It's been a long journey for all of us. It's been overwhelming. I'd change [the ending] in a heartbeat if I could.

"Some people have said I kind of lack emotion and nine out of 10 times I'd agree with that. Something took over me, I was out of control. I just wanted to get off there, I just wanted to cry and be on my own."

England face Germany in the third-place playoff on Saturday.
