Arsenal centre-back Pablo Mari - currently on loan at Monza - is one of five people to have been stabbed in a Milan shopping centre.

Arsenal defender Pablo Mari - currently on loan at Monza - has been stabbed at a Milan shopping centre.

The centre-back is understood to be one of five victims attacked by a 46-year-old man - who was subsequently arrested - in the Carrefour supermarket at the Milanofiori in Assago.

According to La7 and AGI news agency - via Football Italia - the perpetrator began stabbing customers at random in the supermarket, but Mari is not thought to have sustained any serious injuries.

The 29-year-old is understood to be in hospital following the incident and is conscious, but one of the victims has reportedly died from their injuries.

The report adds that Monza CEO Adriano Galliani and coach Raffaele Palladino both quickly made their way to the hospital to be with Mari, with the attack occurring at 17:30 UK time.

Mikel Arteta confirmed the incident after Arsenal's defeat to PSV in the Europa League, telling reporters: "I just found out. I know Edu has been in touch with his relatives. He's in hospital but he seems to be okay."

Mari has one goal in eight appearances for Monza since joining from Arsenal in the summer, and he will sign for the Serie A side permanently if they avoid relegation to the second tier this season.

The Spaniard has scored once in 22 matches for Arsenal since initially arriving on loan from Flamengo in January 2020, winning the FA Cup in his debut season.
