Queensland Reds boss Ewen McKenzie has expressed interest in becoming the next head coach of the Ireland national team.

The Irish parted company with Declan Kidney earlier this week following a disappointing Six Nations campaign, and are on the lookout for a successor.

Although McKenzie said that the Irish Rugby Football Union have not been in contact with his about the post, he made no secret of his desire to fill the role.

"I have said I am looking for coaching challenges at the next level and I am looking for whatever the possibilities are," he told The Telegraph.

"It is the type of job I am interested in looking at, but there have been no discussions.

"I have stated I would like the Wallabies job but it's all in the timing. You have to look around what's available when you're looking for a job."

McKenzie will step down as Queensland coach at the end of the current Super Rugby season.
