Andy Carroll injures ankle on pre-season tour

Andy Carroll will sit out the remaining games on West Ham United's tour of New Zealand after injuring his ankle.

West Ham United have been dealt a blow in their preparations for the new season with the news that Andy Carroll has suffered an ankle injury.

Despite refusing to set a timetable for the striker's recovery, the club has confirmed that Carroll will not play either of the two remaining games on the tour of New Zealand.

"After assessment by the club's medical experts, it was decided to let the England international rest for both remaining games and receive intensive treatment to ensure he is fit for the start of the season," a statement on the club's official website revealed.

"It should be clear that the affected area is not in any way associated with the previous injury he successfully overcame towards the end of last season."

West Ham face Wellington Phoenix in Auckland on Wednesday morning.
