Giovanni Trapattoni is already planning ahead and has spoken about rebuilding his team in preparation for World Cup 2014 qualification.

Giovanni Trapattoni has promised a change of personnel and formation ahead of 2014 World Cup qualifying.

The coach led the Republic of Ireland to their worst ever display at an international tournament, scoring one goal, conceding nine and earning no points.

Trapattoni's thoughts have already begun turning to the future just 24 hours after the disastrous showing at Euro 2012.

The 73-year-old has indicated that he will change both his system and his personnel for the 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign, which begins for Ireland in Kazakhstan in September.

James McClean, Darron Gibson and James McCarthy are expected to be promoted to the starting lineup while Trapattoni will hope that veterans Damien Duff, Richard Dunne, Shay Given and Robbie Keane will play on a little longer.

"There are many names out there who we could use," he said. "We have three, four, five – McClean, for example, James McCarthy is another, and he would allow us to change the system. Now we can try another system because I need to know they can play in this system.

"It is important for us that these senior players help the young [ones] to gain new experience. The young are usually arrogant or shy and the senior players help them grow. That is life, it is not only football."

The Republic of Ireland were beaten by Trapattoni's native Italy 2-0 and exit Euro 2012 at the group phase.
