Davide Santon focused on Newcastle United survival

Davide Santon errs on the side of caution when discussing Newcastle's aspirations this season and insists that avoiding relegation is the priority.

Davide Santon has insisted that he and his Newcastle United teammates are only focusing on staying in the Premier League this season.

The Magpies had to wait until mid-October to pick up their first league victory of the season, but they have since recovered from their early-season woes and sit 10th in the table.

However, Santon says that managerless Newcastle - playing under caretaker boss John Carver following Alan Pardew's resignation - are aiming to reach the 40-point barrier before dreaming of bigger things.

"We have to make sure we get 40 points as soon as possible. Then afterwards we must think even more can be picked up," he told The Express.

"We're thinking about more than just staying in the Premier League. We have Chelsea next and that's another tough game.

"We have to make sure we do our best there and then think about Southampton back at home."

United sit 10 points clear of the relegation zone and nine adrift of fourth-placed Southampton.
