Ex-Manchester United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar claims that he has unfinished business to take care of at Ajax amid links with a return to Old Trafford.

Former Manchester United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar has played down talk of returning to the Red Devils in a behind-the-scenes role.

The 51-year-old - who currently serves as Ajax's chief executive - has been strongly tipped to succeed Ed Woodward when he steps down from his post either this year or in 2022.

However, Van der Sar has insisted that he has unfinished business with Ajax to take care of first, telling Ziggo: "I don't want to become the Wenger or Ferguson of Ajax.

"I'm really enjoying working at Ajax but there will come a time I will leave. But our ambition hasn't been achieved just yet. We want Ajax to compete more in Europe."

Van der Sar won four Premier League titles and a Champions League with Man United before hanging up his gloves at the age of 40 in 2011.

The ex-Netherlands shot-stopper totalled 135 clean sheets in 266 appearances for the Red Devils and also won four Eredivisie titles and the Champions League as Ajax's number one.
