'The Sun' apologises over Hillsborough report

The Sun issues an apology over the false claims it published over the Hillsborough disaster in 1989.

The Sun has issued an apology over the false claims it published about the Hillsborough disaster in 1989.

Tomorrow's edition of the newspaper will run the headline 'The Real Truth' on its front page following the release of the Hillsborough committee's condemning report.

In the wake of the tragedy, the publication printed an article titled 'The Truth' with three sub-headings: 'Some Fans Picked Pockets of Victims', 'Some Fans Urinated on the Brave Cops' and 'Some Fans Beat Up PC Giving Kiss Of Life'.

However, today's report found all of these allegations to be untrue, while also discovering that a number of police statements had been doctored in an attempt to blame Liverpool supporters for the disaster which cost 96 people their lives.

The newspaper has now acknowledged that "cops smeared Liverpool fans to deflect blame" and said that it is "profoundly sorry for false reports".

The Sun's editor at the time, Kelvin MacKenzie, offered an individual apology earlier today claiming he was "totally misled" by a local news agency that provided the report.
