Liverpool's Joel Matip is ruled out for the remainder of the season with the thigh injury he sustained against Crystal Palace.

Liverpool defender Joel Matip is expected to miss the remainder of the season with a thigh injury.

The centre-back sustained the problem during last weekend's 2-1 win against Crystal Palace, and the club's medical staff have since confirmed that he will require surgery as a result.

"Matip was able to complete the full 90 minutes of the fixture, but afterwards medical assessment on the thigh revealed surgery is expected to be required to correct the problem," read a statement on the club's official website.

"The operation is likely to end the 26-year-old's involvement in the remainder of the 2017-18 season."

The news comes as a setback for Liverpool in their preparations for Wednesday's Champions League quarter-final clash with Manchester City at Anfield.
