A late goal from substitute Jermain Defoe has given England a 2-1 win over Italy in tonight's friendly in Berne, Switzerland.

The Italians made the breakthrough against the run of play after 15 minutes as Daniele De Rossi beat Michael Carrick to the ball to head in from a corner.

Adam Johnson's low drive was then saved before Phil Jagielka scored his first goal for England when he stooped to head in from Frank Lampard's corner after 28 minutes.

Roy Hodgson's men could have gone in ahead at the break, but Lampard's powerful shot from distance was palmed away.

Substitute goalkeeper John Ruddy was kept busy at the start of the second half as he was forced to save efforts from Antonio Nocerino and Destro.

As both teams enjoyed possession in the final third, Defoe had an opportunity smothered by the Italian defence.

England had a great chance with 75 minutes on the clock, but another replacement, Joleon Lescott, somehow failed to convert from four yards out following a scramble in the box.

However, the Three Lions scored a winner soon after thanks to Defoe's swerving drive from the edge of the area.
