Phil Jagielka: 'We need to leave Goodison Park for Everton to progress'

Phil Jagielka believes that Everton need to relocate to a new stadium in order "move forward" as a club.

Everton defender Phil Jagielka believes that it is vital for the club to set up home in a new stadium in order to "move forward".

The Merseyside outfit have held discussions with Liverpool City Council over possibly building a new ground on Walton Hall Park.

While a specific timescale is yet to be set, the Premier League club have begun the process of moving from Goodison, which has been their home since 1892.

"For us to move forward as a club, there is going to come a time when unfortunately we will have to leave Goodison," ESPN quotes Jagielka as saying. "We've had some fantastic memories here. It's brilliant to play here but there will come a time when we will need to move.

"It's really early stages yet, and I'm not sure even of the timeframe, but I am sure that once we do have a new stadium, it will be fantastic for the club to kick on another level. I hope I'll be around to play in the new stadium."

Meanwhile, Everton are preparing to host Wolfsburg at Goodison in tomorrow evening's Europa League group game.
