Jermain Defoe targets England recall

Jermain Defoe says that he will draw on the pain of missing out on England's World Cup squad as motivation to earn a second chance at international level.

Sunderland striker Jermain Defoe has expressed an ambition to play for England again after returning to the Premier League this month.

He joined the Black Cats from MLS side Toronto last week and made his debut in Saturday's 2-1 defeat at Tottenham Hotspur.

The 32-year-old was left out of Roy Hodgson's World Cup squad in the summer, a snub which he claims has made him determined to earn a second chance on the international scene.

"I'd love to represent my country again," he told the Daily Star. "It's the best thing in the world pulling on that shirt.

"I'd like to think I'll get that opportunity again if I'm scoring goals here. I've got a lot to offer. I still feel sharp and feel like I've got a lot of goals left in me.

"I was disappointed and upset to be left out last time, but I still want to play and score goals for England."

Defoe, whose last England appearance came in November 2013, has netted 19 times in 55 caps for his country.
