Roy Hodgson opts against Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi in Ballon d'Or vote

England boss Roy Hodgson didn't vote for either Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi to win the Ballon d'Or.

England manager Roy Hodgson did not vote for either Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi for the 2014 FIFA Ballon d'Or, it has emerged.

Ronaldo won the trophy, which is handed out to the world's best player, for the third time on Monday night after receiving 37.66% of the votes, in comparison to Messi's 15.76% and German goalkeeper Manuel Neuer's 15.72%.

Hodgson instead voted for Argentina midfielder Javier Mascherano as his first choice, followed by German defender Philipp Lahm and Neuer.

"Interesting insight into Roy Hodgson and his philosohy. Not one creative flair player in his choice for BDO," tweeted former player Stan Collymore.

Welshman Gareth Bale finished 12th with 1% of the vote.
