Jesse Lingard: 'Nathan Redmond told me to wait on the edge'

Jesse Lingard reveals that Nathan Redmond's advice was crucial to him firing England Under-21s' winning goal in their victory over Sweden at the European Championships.

Jesse Lingard has credited Nathan Redmond for helping him score the decisive goal in England Under-21s 1-0 victory over Sweden at the European Championships.

The Manchester United man struck five minutes from time to hand the Young Lions a vital win to bolster their hopes of reaching the next round of the competition.

Lingard has admitted that Redmond told him to wait on the edge of the box for a corner, which proved to be crucial as he collected the ball and fired home the winning goal with a fine volleyed effort.

He told the FA's official website: "At first, I was going to go in the box, but Nathan Redmond said to stay there so I'll give the assist to him. I was free on the edge of the area and as soon as I hit it, I knew it was in and the celebrations started.

"You always know whether to shoot or pass and I knew straight away to hit it.

"We deserved that. Sweden were looking for that draw, they were well organised and pressed the ball well for near enough the whole 90 minutes. But we needed the win and luckily we got that corner and the goal."

Gareth Southgate's men are next in action against Italy on Wednesday.
