Ancelotti: Torres had no chances

Carlo Ancelotti says that Fernando Torres was not given the opportunity to score last night.

Carlo Ancelotti has defended Fernando Torres after he failed to score again last night.

The Spanish striker, who joined Chelsea for £50 million in January, has now made 12 goalless appearances for The Blues.

According to Ancelotti, Torres was not given any decent chances after being brought on in last night's 3-1 victory over Birmingham.

"He went on the pitch when [we weren't playing] so well, so he had no opportunity to score," Ancelotti told the BBC afterwards.

"Torres is not the problem. He's not scoring now but we have confidence he will. He will play the next game. We hope that everything will be okay."

He added that Torres, 27, is "obviously not happy" with the situation. "When a striker doesn't score he is not happy. But nobody [is asking] him to score. When the team wins, we don't need to have Fernando scoring a goal."

Last night's result puts Chelsea second on the table, level in points with Arsenal but still six points behind Man Utd with five games still remaining.
