Dinamo Zagreb edge Celtic in seven-goal thriller

A hat-trick from Marko Pjaca helps Dinamo Zagreb to record a 4-3 win over Celtic in their final Europa League group-stage match.

Marko Pjaca scored a hat-trick as Dinamo Zagreb held off a late Celtic fightback to win 4-3 in their Europa League tie this evening.

Callum McGregor blasted over from just outside the box and Kris Commons forced the keeper to beat away his angled drive as the visitors made a positive start.

El Arbi Hillel Soudani then had a goal disallowed when he slotted into the net after the ball appeared to come through to him off a Celtic player.

Zagreb did manage to take the lead in the 14th minute when Pjaca latched on to Arijan Ademi's deflected shot, before curling an effort into the corner past Craig Gordon.

The visitors hit back midway through the first half as Commons headed in from close range after Virgil van Dijk's free kick had been deflected off the wall and into his path.

Celtic scored again seven minutes later when a free kick from Commons hit the bar and was headed back into the middle by Nir Bitton for Stefan Scepovic to volley home.

However, the Hoops were pegged back in the 39th minute when Adam Matthews gave the ball away cheaply inside the box to Pjaca, who then slotted in a low effort that deflected past the keeper.

The second half continued at a frantic pace and within four minutes of the restart Marcelo Brozovic was found on the edge of the box by Domagoj Antolic, before bending a strike into the corner.

Within a minute Zagreb scored their fourth of the match, as Pjaca fired an effort from range into the corner to complete his hat-trick.

As the game entered the final 10 minutes Celtic pulled a goal back when Josip Pivaric turned a cross from Anthony Stokes into his own net.

Scepovic was then inches away from drawing Celtic level, but after connecting with a corner, he headed the ball across goal and onto the far post.

Celtic were not able to score a fourth, but the result mattered little, as they were already assured of a place in the knockout stages.
