Steve Cotterill hails a "truly fantastic season" for Bristol City

Bristol City boss Steve Cotterill hails a "truly fantastic season" for his League One champions after they finished their campaign with an 8-2 hammering of Walsall.

Bristol City boss Steve Cotterill has urged his players to enjoy their summer holidays after hailing a "truly fantastic season" for his League One champions.

A final-day flourish saw the champions hammer Walsall 8-2 on Sunday to finish their campaign on 99 points in the League One table.

Speaking after the game, Cotterill praised his players for their performances throughout the campaign, and said that he was delighted with how his squad played against the Saddlers, despite having already confirmed their status as division winners before the game.

He told the club's official website: "To score eight goals in a game is no mean feat. It's fantastic because we've gone right to the end – right to the 93rd minute in the last game of the season.

"They deserve all the plaudits they get. They're a fantastic group and I love working with them. From the moment we turned up to the moment the season finished, it's been one big effort by everybody. I can't thank everybody enough.

"It's been a truly fantastic season and now the boys can go and enjoy their summer holidays – I suppose we all can."

City will be joined in the Championship next term by MK Dons, while the playoffs will feature Preston North End, Swindon Town, Sheffield United and Chesterfield.
