Bristol City put eight past Walsall

League One champions Bristol City finish their campaign off in style with an 8-2 hammering of Walsall at Ashton Gate.

A jubilant crowd at Ashton Gate saw League One champions Bristol City finish their campaign off in style with an 8-2 hammering of Walsall this afternoon.

The visitors took a surprise lead on 11 minutes when Jordy Hiwula converted calmly after a swift counter-attack.

However, the champions responded through Aden Flint when he volleyed home from a corner on 16 minutes after good pressure from the hosts.

Steve Cotterill's side were handed a great chance to take the lead before the half-hour mark when Kieron Morris was judged to have handled the ball inside area.

Jay Emmanuel-Thomas took the resulting spot-kick and made no mistake from 12 yards to give the promoted side the lead before the break.

However, Hiwula struck his second of the afternoon on 36 minutes when he side-footed home past an unsighted goalkeeper.

Hiwula almost had his hat-trick after the restart, but he was perhaps guilty of snatching at his shot before Kieran Agard gave City the lead once more.

A swift counter-attack from a Walsall corner saw the ball fall to Agard, who made no mistake with a composed finish to make it 3-2 shortly before the hour mark.

Five minutes later, Thomas Pack gave the home side a two-goal cushion when he applied the finish to Emmanuel-Thomas's cross.

Emmanuel-Thomas then powered his way through the visiting defence before smashing home to make it 5-2, before Flint added another as the home side finished their season off with a flourish.

Flint registered his hat-trick inside the final 10 minutes, before Agard made it eight in stoppage time, and the win means that Cotterill's men finish their campaign on 99 points in the League One table.
