Bolton Wanderers release leaves Kevin Davies "shocked"

Bolton Wanderers striker Kevin Davies concedes that he is surprised to have been notified that he is being released in the summer.

Kevin Davies has described himself as "shocked" upon learning that his current contract at Bolton Wanderers would not be extended beyond the end of the ongoing campaign.

The striker, who turned 36 today, has spent the last 10 years of his career at the Reebok Stadium, making over 400 appearances in the process.

However, manager Dougie Freedman revealed earlier today that he would not require the veteran's services next season.

"It was a bit of a shock. I was shocked at the time and it's not quite sunk in yet, but these things happen," he told talkSPORT. "We'd had a couple of sit downs because as a player you want to get a feel of what's happening next season – will I be here or not? And they made that decision today.

"It's surprising. This is home and I thought I'd be at this club until I retired and maybe start coaching and doing that sort of thing afterwards. But that's not going to be."

The former England international then went on to confirm that he had no intention of hanging up his boots.

"I'm a big, strong man and I can only hold my head up high and see where the future takes me. Nothing lasts forever and the manager has made the decision for the club," he added.

"I've made 38 appearances this season and I'm still doing the same things as the younger boys in training. I know I can still do it at this level, if not back in the Premier League.

"I've had a few clubs come in for me so I'm not going to start panicking about retiring just yet. I want to carry on for at least a couple more years yet. It hurts right now, but hopefully by the end of this season I'll have a new challenge ahead of me."

Davies also revealed that he could go out on loan before Thursday's deadline passes.
