Lionel Messi says that he chose not to attend Pep Guardiola's press conference because he did not want to show his emotions to the waiting media.

Barcelona star Lionel Messi has revealed that he was too emotional to attend the press conference where manager Pep Guardiola announced his impending departure from the illustrious club.

The majority of the team were present when the 41-year-old coach confirmed that he is to leave the club at the end of the season but Messi was a notable absentee.

"I wholeheartedly thank Pep for how much he has done for my personal and professional career," Messi said on his Facebook page. "Because of the emotion I feel, I chose not to attend the press conference."

The 24-year-old mentioned that he wanted to be away from the waiting media in order "not to show" his emotions.
