Preview: Millwall vs. Plymouth Argyle - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Saturday's Championship clash between Millwall and Plymouth Argyle, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Millwall play host to Plymouth Argyle on Saturday afternoon knowing they have already secured their Championship status with two matches remaining.

However, it is a different story for 20th-placed Plymouth, who make the trip to The Den sitting just two points clear of the relegation zone.

Of all the managerial changes that have taken place throughout the 2023-24 Championship campaign, the return of Neil Harris to Millwall has proven to be the most effective.

The Lions had looked on course to be in a relegation scrap during the run-in, but the club legend has returned to deliver 20 points from his 11 games in charge.

That is the sixth-best return across that period in the entire division, helped by Millwall also putting together a three-match winning streak.

On the back of defeating Leicester City and Cardiff City at home, the East Londoners travelled to the Stadium of Light to record a 1-0 victory at Sunderland.

With 13 points having been collected from their last five fixtures at The Den, Millwall will be confident of ending their home schedule on a high.

As for Plymouth, they find themselves under far more pressure having lost 3-0 to Stoke City - the club of former manager Steven Schumacher - last weekend.

Under the guidance of Neil Dewsnip, seven points had been accumulated from their previous three fixtures to move the Pilgrims away from the bottom three.

However, losing, and heavily, to the Potters has led to Plymouth now sitting just two points above 22nd-placed Birmingham City, who also boast a goal difference that is just five inferior.

Blues face Huddersfield on Saturday, creating a scenario where Plymouth are guaranteed to be closer to relegation if they suffer their 13th away defeat of the season.

Team News

Duncan Watmore will hope to be restored to the Millwall XI after coming off the bench to score the winner at former club Sunderland.

George Honeyman is the player likely to drop out, while Tom Bradshaw is pushing for a start ahead of Michael Obafemi.

As it stands, only Murray Wallace is expected to miss out for the Lions through injury.

Jordan Houghton should be recalled to the Plymouth starting lineup courtesy of Adam Forshaw being withdrawn during the early stages at Stoke.

Lewis Gibson and Ashley Phillips will both be considered for a return in defence, as could Alfie Devine in a more advanced role.

Millwall possible starting lineup:
Sarkic; Leonard, Tanganga, Cooper, McNamara; Watmore, De Norre, Saville, Longman; Bradshaw, Flemming

Plymouth Argyle possible starting lineup:
Cooper; Gibson, Scarr, Galloway; Edwards, Randell, Houghton, Mumba; Whittaker, Bundu; Hardie

We say: Millwall 2-0 Plymouth Argyle

Although it remains to be seen whether Millwall will react positively or negatively to playing with reduced pressure, we cannot ignore their three successive wins. While Plymouth have improved of late, a home victory looks far more likely.
