Early Nathaniel Clyne goal gives Liverpool victory over Bournemouth

Nathaniel Clyne's first Liverpool goal gives the Reds a 1-0 win in their League Cup tie with Bournemouth, as Jurgen Klopp secures a first win at the Merseyside club.

Nathaniel Clyne's first Liverpool goal has given the Reds a 1-0 win in their League Cup tie with Bournemouth this evening, sending Jurgen Klopp's side through to the quarter-finals.

Liverpool made a bright start to the match, as Roberto Firmino dragged a shot wide just seconds after kickoff, before the Brazilian forced a save from Cherries keeper Adam Federici from 25 yards.

The Reds took the lead on 17 minutes, as young midfielder Joao Teixera saw a back-heeled effort cleared off the line, before Nathaniel Clyne pounced onto the rebound and fired into the net.

Bournemouth came close to finding an equaliser in the first half, as Harry Arter fired narrowly wide from the edge of the Liverpool box, before Junior Stanislas was twice denied by Bogdan.

After the break the visitors started on the front foot, as Welsh midfielder Shaun MacDonald headed narrowly wide from a Stanislas corner.

Liverpool came close to doubling their advantage on 58 minutes, as Firmino stole possession from Marc Pugh, before the former Hoffenheim man dragged an effort wide.

Adam Federici twice denied the Reds a second goal late on, as Lucas Leiva tested the Australian with a powerful effort before the former Reading keeper parried a Teixera free kick.

The Cherries almost found an equaliser before the final whistle, as Tokelo Rantie fired over the bar, before Bogdan kept out a Ritchie effort to secure Klopp's first win in charge of the Merseyside outfit.
