Tottenham transfer news: Borussia Dortmund ace with 'dual benefit' eyed for January deal

Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly keeping tabs on Borussia Dortmund's Julian Brandt, whom they have identified as a possible cut-price alternative to Eberechi Eze.

Tottenham Hotspur have supposedly expressed an interest in signing Borussia Dortmund attacker Julian Brandt next month.

There has been no shortage of firepower in the Lilywhites' ranks in recent weeks, hitting Manchester United for four in the EFL Cup in midweek before Sunday's thrilling 6-3 loss to Liverpool.

Ange Postecoglou's chief concerns undoubtedly lie at the back rather than up front at this juncture, but Tottenham could be in the market for offensive reinforcements in 2025.

Timo Werner's loan deal from RB Leipzig is not expected to be made permanent, and club captain Son Heung-min is out of contract at the end of the season, although Spurs can exercise an option to extend his stay by another year.

The consensus is that Tottenham will trigger Son's 12-month clause, but the South Korea captain is already 32 years of age, and what the future holds for him beyond the end of the 2025-26 season is unclear.

Spurs are also lacking cover for James Maddison in the number 10 position, and according to FootballTransfers, this is where Borussia Dortmund fulcrum Brandt could come in.

The 28-year-old - who was strongly linked with a move to Spurs' bitter rivals Arsenal several years ago - is about to enter the last 18 months of his deal with the Champions League finalists, and there has been no talk of a possible extension.

BVB may therefore consider selling Brandt in 2025 to avoid the risk of losing him for nothing further down the line, and the report adds that they could consider bids for the playmaker as early as January.

The Germany international would represent a cut-price alternative to Eberechi Eze for Tottenham, who are expected to be working with limited funds in January but will have a more sizeable war chest in the summer.

However, as Postecoglou is apparently keen to bolster his frontline over the winter, Spurs could put their pursuit of the £60m-rated Eze on ice and chase a cut-price deal for Brandt when the window reopens.

Why do Spurs want to sign Brandt?

Aside from the obvious financial reasons, Brandt is in the peak of his playing career and can operate in a multitude of positions in the frontline, although his favoured roles are behind the striker or on the left flank.

Tottenham therefore feel that Brandt's arrival could have a 'dual benefit', as the 28-year-old would provide a natural alternative to Maddison if the Englishman got injured, while also being a candidate for rotation out wide.

Brandt has had a direct hand in nine goals in 19 appearances for Dortmund this term - three of his own and six assists - while totalling 43 goals and 56 assists in 235 appearances for the club since joining from Bayer Leverkusen in 2019.

The midfielder seldom spends time in the treatment room either; he has missed just 25 games through injury or illness for club and country during his time at Signal Iduna Park, and never more than four in succession.
