Liverpool team news: Injury, suspension list vs. Newcastle United

Sports Mole rounds up all of Liverpool's latest injury and suspension news ahead of Wednesday night's Premier League clash with Newcastle United.

Liverpool will be looking to bounce straight back to winning ways when they take on Newcastle United at St James' Park on Wednesday night.

Jurgen Klopp's side were held to a disappointing draw at home to West Bromwich Albion on Sunday, a result which saw their lead at the top of the Premier League table cut from four points to three.

The champions have struggled on the road in general this season too, although their last away game before this one saw them run riot in a 7-0 hammering of Crystal Palace.

Here, Sports Mole rounds up Liverpool's latest injury and suspension news ahead of the trip to Newcastle.

Joel Matip

Status: Out
Type of injury: Adductor
Possible return date: Unknown

Liverpool's disappointment at dropping points at home to West Brom was compounded by Joel Matip - their last available recognised senior centre-back - picking up an injury which forced him off. The full extent of the problem is yet to be revealed, but Klopp admitted that it was "not too good" and he is certain to miss Wednesday's game.

Thiago Alcantara

Status: Minor doubt
Type of injury: Knee
Possible return date: December 30 (vs. Newcastle)

In brighter news for Liverpool, Thiago Alcantara could be set to return to the matchday squad for the trip to Newcastle, having featured only twice since joining the club in the summer. Klopp may again opt for caution and delay his return even further, but the midfielder is very close to making his long-awaited comeback now.

Naby Keita

Status: Out
Type of injury: Muscle
Possible return date: Unknown

Naby Keita's stop-start season suffered another setback ahead of the West Brom draw as he picked up a muscle injury which will also rule him out of this match.

Diogo Jota

Status: Out
Type of injury: Knee
Possible return date: February 6 (vs. Manchester City)

Diogo Jota's good start to life at Liverpool was halted by a knee injury which has proven to be more serious than first thought, potentially ruling him out until February.

Kostas Tsimikas

Status: Out
Type of injury: Knee
Possible return date: February 6 (vs. Manchester City)

Kostas Tsimikas suffered a similar injury to Jota in the very same game and will also spend a couple of months on the sidelines, ruling him out for the start of 2021.

Joe Gomez

Status: Out
Type of injury: Knee
Possible return date: Unknown

There has been no timescale put on Joe Gomez's return after he suffered a serious knee injury while away on international duty with England, but it will still be some time before he is back in contention for the champions.

Virgil van Dijk

Status: Out
Type of injury: Knee
Possible return date: Unknown

Virgil van Dijk is also out, quite possibly for the entire season, with a knee injury which he sustained in the Merseyside derby. The centre-back's recovery is going well, but there is still a long road ahead.

LIVERPOOL'S SUSPENSION LIST

Liverpool have no players suspended for this match.
