Newcastle United edge past Cardiff City

Newcastle United beat Cardiff City 2-1 in this afternoon's Premier League match at the Cardiff City Stadium.

Newcastle United have defeated Cardiff City 2-1 in their Premier League match at the Cardiff City Stadium, with Loic Remy scoring both goals for the visitors.

The visitors had a chance to take the lead within the first five minutes of the match through Papiss Cisse, who latched onto Davide Santon's cross-field pass but could not get the ball under his control.

The striker worked another opening moments later when he curled a fierce strike from the edge of the box over the bar.

David Marshall then came to the home side's rescue by making a double save from Cisse and Loic Remy before denying Moussa Sissoko by tipping his stinging effort over the bar.

The visitors took the lead on the half-hour mark through Remy. The striker picked the ball up wide on the left, made his way inside and unleashed a low shot from the edge of the box past Marshall's reach.

The keeper was called into action almost immediately and did well to hold onto Yohan Cabaye's strike from distance.

Newcastle were in firm control of the game and Remy scored his second goal of the afternoon in the 38th minute. Cisse saw his shot blocked by the Cardiff defence and it fell kindly to Remy, who calmly slotted the rebound into the net.

The away side started the second half strongly and Marshall was again forced into a save, denying a powerful effort from Cabaye.

As the game approached the hour mark, Peter Odemwingie pulled a goal back for Cardiff when he slotted home after latching onto Jordon Mutch's pass.

The hosts almost scored their second just minutes later after Fraizer Campbell fired a shot across the box that Aron Gunnarsson narrowly failed to make contact with.

Remy was denied his chance of a hat-trick when he was taken off with 20 minutes to go. His replacement Jonas Gutierrez nearly made an immediate impact but headed over from close range.

Craig Bellamy forced Tim Krul into a save before the visitors should have been awarded a penalty after Andrew Taylor handled inside the box. However, Newcastle held on against late Cardiff pressure to record an important victory.
