Martin Keown praises Wolverhampton Wanderers for pulling off the "amazing" signing of Portugal keeper Rui Patricio on a free during the summer.

Martin Keown has lauded Wolverhampton Wanderers for pulling off the "remarkable" signing of Portugal keeper Rui Patricio over the summer.

The experienced stopper joined the Midlands side over the summer on a free after cancelling his contract with boyhood club Sporting Lisbon.

In the same window, Liverpool and Chelsea each spent more than £70m on bringing in Alisson Becker and Kepa Arrizabalaga respectively, and pundit Keown believes that Wolves had easily the better deal.

"The main reason Wolves earned their point against Manchester City was Rui Patricio," he told the Daily Mail. "He pulled off two world class saves and when you can bring in a player of that quality, you get results you could only have dreamed of.

"It is remarkable that Wolves could sign Rui Patricio on a free. I would argue he is a better goalkeeper than Kepa Arrizabalaga, who cost Chelsea a world-record £71.6m.

"In an age when full backs and goalkeepers cost more than centre forwards, Wolves pulled off an amazing piece of business."

Wolves still could be forced to pay compensation to Sporting for Patricio after the Portuguese side reportedly opened legal proceedings, demanding as much as £48m for the keeper.
