Unai Emery believes that Paris Saint-Germain can showcase how far they have come since last season's Champions League exit to Barcelona in this season's tie with Real Madrid.

Unai Emery has claimed that Paris Saint-Germain can showcase how far they have come since last season's Champions League exit at the hands of Barcelona in this term's encounter with Real Madrid.

The Parisians built up a seemingly insurmountable 4-0 lead against the Blaugrana in the last-16 first leg a year ago, only for the Spaniards to win the second leg 6-1 and advance to the next round.

PSG have since added Neymar and Kylian Mbappe to their ranks and will lock horns with Barca's bitter rivals in the second round of the Champions League, which Emery sees as a chance for redemption.

"Perhaps the preparation for this game began in that game," Emery told the Daily Mail. "When things don't well you learn a lot. The team is ready to compete at this level. We have more experience and we are better prepared to progress.

"This game is an opportunity for us. We are playing against the champions and the team that has won this competition the most. We want to reach that level.

"We have huge respect for the rival but we also have a lot of confidence in our ability to qualify for the quarter-finals. This is a great opportunity to show how we have advanced."

PSG have eliminated Real in their two previous European knockout encounters, the 1992-93 UEFA Cup and the 1993-94 Cup Winners Cup, both times in the quarter-finals.
