Peter Lovenkrands annouces retirement

Former Newcastle United and Rangers player Peter Lovenkrands retires from professional football.

Peter Lovenkrands has called time on his playing career with immediate effect.

The 34-year-old, who started his career in his native Denmark with Akademisk Boldklub before having spells at Rangers, Schalke 04 and Newcastle United, had spent the previous two seasons with Birmingham City.

However, having been unable to find a new club following his release in the summer, Lovenkrands has decided to retire.

"Today I announce my retirement as a football player. I am proud of all the things I have achieved in my career," he wrote on Twitter.

"I want to thank some of the coaches and medical staff for looking after me and I want to thank all the the fans that has supported me my whole career I will never forget it."

The striker's most successful time came at Rangers, whom he helped to win the Scottish Premier League twice, as well as the Scottish League Cup three times and the Scottish Cup once.
