Andre-Pierre Gignac fires Marseille to win

A second-half goal from Andre-Pierre Gignac gives Marseille a 1-0 win over Guingamp in Ligue 1.

A goal at the start of the second half from Andre-Pierre Gignac has given Marseille a 1-0 win over Guingamp in Ligue 1 this evening.

The hosts had a chance to open the scoring after just two minutes as Mustapha Diallo unleashed a long-range shot, but Steve Mandanda was able to make the save.

Florian Thauvin had the first opportunity of the evening for the visitors when he tried to fire home from a Dimitri Payet cross, but he could not get the better of Mamadou Samassa.

Marseille continued to see the majority of the ball and came close to opening the scoring when Gignac unleashed a powerful effort from 35 yards out, but the keeper tipped it behind.

The visitors broke the deadlock just seconds after the restart as Payet fired the ball into Gignac, who found the net from the right-hand side of the box.

Gignac came close to adding a second later in the half, but his strike from an Abdel Barrada through ball finished just off target.

Guingamp came within inches of getting back on level terms when Reynald Lemaitre volleyed the ball towards the Marseille goal from outside the box following a corner, but his shot was kept out by the crossbar.

Romain Alessandrini nearly put the result beyond doubt in stoppage time, attempting to tap in from a corner, but his miss did not prevent Marseille from securing all three points.

The result leaves Marseille eighth in the league table, while Guingamp remain 14th.
