Atlanta launches Major League Soccer franchise

Atlanta will enter a team into Major League Soccer in 2017.

Atlanta has launched a Major League Soccer franchise and will enter a team in the competition in 2017.

The city's MLS club will be owned by Home Depo co-founder Arthur Blank, who has a majority stake in NFL outfit the Atlanta Falcons.

A $1 billion retractable roof stadium will be constructed beside Atlanta's Georgia Dome, shared by the Falcons and the new soccer team.

MLS has 19 teams this season, but there are plans in place to extend this to 24, with Orlando City and New York City entering the competition next season.

David Beckham previously confirmed that he is launching an MLS franchise in Miami.
