How Arsenal could line up against Valencia

Sports Mole looks at how Arsenal could line up for the first leg of their Europa League semi-final against Valencia on Thursday evening.

Competing in the semi-finals of the Europa League for the second year running, Arsenal will be looking to go one better than last season when they take on Valencia.

The Gunners crashed out 2-1 on aggregate to Atletico Madrid 12 months ago, losing 1-0 in Spain after a 1-1 draw in the first leg on home soil.

Arsenal have relied largely on their home form to carry them this far, having lost away to BATE Borisov and Rennes in the last 32 and last 16 respectively, though they did beat Napoli both home and away in the most recent round.

Ahead of Thursday's home leg against Valencia at the Emirates Stadium, Sports Mole looks at how Unai Emery may set out his side.

Out: Aaron Ramsey (hamstring), Denis Suarez (muscle fatigue), Hector Bellerin (knee), Rob Holding (knee), Danny Welbeck (ankle)
Doubtful: Nacho Monreal (calf), Mesut Ozil (foot)

Emery will definitely be without key midfield man Ramsey for Thursday's match, while Suarez, Bellerin, Holding and Welbeck are also out.

Of more immediate concern to Emery will be the fitness of Ozil and Monreal, who missed the 3-0 defeat to Leicester City on Sunday and remain doubtful.

Both players will start if they recover from their respective foot and calf problems in time, and the fitness of Ozil could potentially determine what formation the hosts use.

Arsenal fielded Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette in tandem against Napoli in the last round, with Ozil playing just behind, and that is likely to be the way Emery goes this time.

The alternative is leaving one of Aubameyang or Lacazette on the bench and using an additional attacking midfielder - either Henrikh Mkhitaryan or Alex Iwobi.

Laurent Koscielny is likely to return to the backline, meanwhile, which will be bad news for out-of-form teammate Shkodran Mustafi, who may miss out a reunion against his former side.
